Three significant events I just had to mention from this date in Rock & Roll History:
1971: Led Zeppelin released their fourth album. It has been called different things, including IV and ZOSO. Whatever you call this one, it’s a freakin’ Desert Island Disc. This is as good a Rock & Roll album as any that has ever been recorded. I’m one of the only people I know who actually prefer the non-Stairway side of this classic record. Mind-bogglingly, this one never hit #1, although it did remain on the charts for more than three years.
1971: Paul McCartney threw a party in London to introduce his new group, Wings. Wings takes a beating from a lot of folks, but I’m not one of them. Sir Paul wrote a ton of excellent songs for this group, just as he had done for that other band he was in.
1976: The Best of George Harrison was released in the U.S. George was an immensely underrated songwriter, and this record delivers just a smattering of his brilliance. Honestly, it’s hard not to be overshadowed when you’re in a band the Rogers & Hammerstein of Rock & Roll.
