“Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd smiling.”-Pink Floyd

This is how I begin most of my speaking engagements. When I take the stage I survey the audience with a big grin on my face until people begin to get slightly uncomfortable. Then I share this lyric from Pink Floyd and it generally gets a laugh. I also do it when I get on an elevator, which sometimes freaks people out a little.

Smiling is a great way to connect with people. The next time you encounter someone you don’t know, take a deep breath while making eye contact and then smile. If they smile back, which they will far more often than not, you have the first connection that can lead to rapport.

Rapport is simply communicating with another person in a manner that allows them to feel connected to you. And communicating through eye contact and a smile is a quick way to initiate that connection.
