“Stop making sense.”-Talking Heads

Why do things always have to make sense? They don’t! Not everything in life needs to make sense, except to people who pride themselves on being anal-retentive (does anal-retentive even have a hyphen?).

Sometimes the need to make sense out of every situation interferes with the integrity of having fun in this moment.

Take spontaneity, for example. It doesn’t always make sense, but most of the time it’s loads of fun. Fun is always best accomplished by having lots to do and not doing it. And having fun is a whole lot more important to our state of mental health than making sense.

Then again, sometimes it just makes good sense to embrace nonsense. Nonsense is a shockingly delightful wakeup call for your creativity.

STOP MAKING SENSE! Scream it out loud and see how it feels. Unless you are at work, in which case people would think you’re nuts (if they do not already). Go outside and scream it at the top of your lungs or scream it in the car on the way home. I’ve discovered that screaming it is pretty liberating, and it always makes me laugh.

At least once today, stop making sense and spontaneously do something fun. Who knows, you just might want to do it again tomorrow.
