Gov’t Mule in Milwaukee

Warren Haynes brought his band, Gov’t Mule, to town last week on their Kinder Revolution Fall Tour. (Thanks to a severe case of the flu, this is the first opportunity I’ve had to comment on the show.)
There is a good reason why Rolling Stone ranked Warren number 23 on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. Whether he’s playing with Mule, the Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh or on Elvin Bishop’s latest album, Warren is a major force with an axe in his hands.
Gov’t Mule gives us a full night of music every time out, clocking in at more than three hours with a delicious blend of southern rock, jam band, take-no-prisoners intensity. And that was after a fiery opening set by Back Door Slam, who I expect we’re going to be hearing a lot more about in the near future.
Warren absolutely tore it up from the git-go, including a killer “Thelonius Beck” and a blistering set-closing “That’s What Love Will Make You Do” that would have made Uncle Jerry smile. The second set was another scorcher, with “Mr. High & Mighty,” “Silent Scream” and “Lucky” leaving us in awe of Warren’s mastery. The encores of the Beatles “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” and “New World Blues” provided a delightful end to an amazing night.
If you love guitar magic and haven’t seen Mule yet, do yourself a favor and get to a show. You’ll be glad you did.
Led Zep, the Stones and The Who are just some of our favorites. Any modern bands come to mind? What are your thoughts? Register on Rock and Roll Blog now and get published within minutes. Before posting, it is recommended that you review our posting guidelines.
